Kelowna council forum #3 at Revelry

  1. Opening statement

The question I keep coming back to is, as Kelowna keeps getting wealthier, why does it keep getting harder to live here? [...] And those people deserve a share in the prosperity that we're creating.

  2. There is talk about a different model for policing. What is your position, and why?

I'd certainly be open to the idea. I'm not clear right now what we would be hoping to accomplish or what problem we'd be trying to solve with a different police force. [...] If the issue we're trying to solve is just cost reduction, then it's certainly worth looking at. I'd be pretty hesitant about what it looks like to actually manage a police force.

  3. What role can the city play in making Kelowna more affordable and livable for families?

what I've been starting to research is things like land value tax, which used to be the norm in BC, actually, and was removed in 1984 [...] there's actually a big push to bring that back and give cities another lever to control how money flows to the city and and put less put less burden on people that are struggling the most and more burden on people who can afford it.

  4. What role can the city play in making Kelowna more affordable and livable for families?

I think a transportation network that could actually reduce vehicle requirements would be huge. If a family could go from two cars to one, or maybe even one car to zero, that's that's hundreds of dollars a month they could be saving

  5. Question from Lee-Ann Tiede: How will you get up to speed on governance?

Today I met with a city manager. To learn his thoughts, to get to know him, I've talked about homelessness and land value tax. I talked to a cop that I saw because I'm curious about how we can address open drug use.

  6. His turn to ask a question, put to Maxine DeHart, about the Eldorado boardwalk

I think it's fair to say most of the public has felt pretty frustrated for years, but especially this summer as it's gone back through the media about the way the boardwalk's been handled and the lack of public access to a publicly accessible place.

  7. How would you help make Kelowna livable 365 days a year?

Sounds like a convention center is a great idea. Not opposed to that. [...] I would want to see the specifics of what we're trying to do and who really needs this change.

  8. What one or two issues are top of mind for you?

So something I've been thinking a lot about is if there's something we can do about open drug use, even just as simple as if we see it, we take it, to not try to solve addiction today, but just get people to do it somewhere else
