Crime and safety is on top of everybody's mind. I'm not separate from anybody else.

  2. Opening statement

The other thing is, of course, housing affordability. How do we get there? The province has come up with many regulations, some of which a lot of the people in the neighborhood are opposed to. How do we navigate our way through getting affordable, attainable homes for people in our city?

  3. Opening statement

The third thing that's dear to my heart is agriculture.

  4. What does leadership mean for you on council?

Not be stuck in your ways, but be willing to discuss the issue, be open-minded and look for the best solution. That is leadership. And not be afraid to be the only voice opposing a project.

  5. A council decision you disagreed with, and what you would have done differently

But I can give you one example which I'm really proud of. [...] So I kept council awake till 12 o'clock, till midnight and I finally got the sign

  6. An area of city spending that deserves greater scrutiny

You know, I think infrastructure would be the big one because right now that's the buzzword. [...] So from that point of view, we have to use a very sharp pencil to make sure we can prove our point so we can get those federal and provincial dollars. And we have been very good at that.

  7. What would you do differently about crime and safety that hasn't been done before?

We have been discussing with Niki Sharma, the Attorney General, about only half of that jail is being used currently. So the other half could well be used as a mandatory care facility. [...] I'd like to see more cops on the road, like the old-fashioned beat cops, walking the streets.

  8. What would you do differently about crime and safety that hasn't been done before?

Also, we're working really hard on bail reform. We need to step that up. That is critical. We need more prosecutors.

  9. Candidate question: Why are no points awarded for being local in city bids?

But you see one of the philosophies of council is that our contractors bid on projects overseas and in the US. And so if we stop others, what happens if our contractors don't get the same opportunities elsewhere? I agree with you. I'd rather have a local contractor.

  10. Candidate question: What advice do you give new candidates about campaigning and onboarding?

Homelessness and all this is not part of a municipal mandate. It's landed in our lap. It's become a part of our responsibility now. Ours are things like sewer, water, lights, roadways, parks. This is what we should be focusing on.
